On Holy Thursday are painted eggs to Easter. The hostesses in Strandja using the children help painted about 100-150 eggs (depending on the family members). The eggs were stained only in red and yellow.

These colors are derived from boiled leaves of pear, sumac, madder, bear ear, dock and scales of onion. Optionally they are painted with wax before cooking.

The first painted egg is kept until next Easter. The residents of the settlements in Strandja Mountain is one of the few Bulgarian communities maintaining tradition over the years.
